Director: Ron Howard
Writers: Akiva Goldsman, Sylvia Nasar (book)
Stars: Russell Crowe, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly

After a brilliant but asocial mathematician accepts secret work in cryptography, his life takes a turn to the nightmarish.

Nash: Classes will dull your mind, destroy the potential for authentic creativity.
Charles: Nothing's ever for sure, John. That's the only sure thing I do know.
Nash: What truly is logic? Who decides reason? My quest has taken me to the physical, the metaphysical, the delusional, and back. I have made the most important discovery of my career - the most important discovery of my life. It is only in the mysterious equations of love that any logic or reasons can be found. I am only here tonight because of you.
Alicia: God must be a painter. Why else would we have so many colors?

Questions for discussion:

  1. John Nash refused to go to the classes at Princeton because they ‘dull your mind’. What do you think about it? Do agree that for bright students it is better to focus on individual research work than to attend classes with others?
  2. What can you say about John’s lifestyle? Do you think that being lonely is a burden of a genius?
  3. What attracts Alicia in John? What did she go after him?
  4. Why did Alicia stay with John when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia? Do you think it was just because she loved him or that she had other reasons?
  5. It was quite hard for Nash to re-establish his life and career after he discovered he had a mental disease. What do you think should be done to help such people go back to normal life? Or should they not be allowed to work at all?
  6. Dr. Rosen said that the nightmare of schizophrenia is not knowing what is real. Do you agree? If not, what is the worst about John Nash’s condition then?
